Week-long workshops

Week-long furniture workshops at Pocahontas Woods are held from Monday to Friday for four hours each morning. This will give students time in the afternoons to explore Pocahontas County and take advantage of the many tourist activities in the area.

Payment and refund policies:
All workshop classes require a deposit of one half the tuition cost at the time of registration. The rest of the tuition should be paid by three weeks before the class.

Cancellations:
If you must cancel your registration for a class, notify us three weeks before the class date for an 80% refund. Please use the PDF file attached to register.

 
Shaker oval boxes

Come learn how to make traditional Shaker boxes using hand tools. By the end of the week you'll have your very own Shaker oval box to take home. Students who learn quickly will be able to finish more than one.

This class will take place at the Snowshoe Mountain resort, close to food and lodging, and the four-hour class days will give you plenty of time to enjoy some of the outdoor recreation opportunities Pocahontas County has to offer. Dovetailed serving tray

Build your own beautiful cherry dovetailed serving tray. In this class you'll learn how to use a handsaw and hand planes, as well as how to lay out and cut a dovetail joint. You will leave this class with your completed tray and the knowledge of basic woodworking skills which can translate into a wide variety of other projects.

There’s a whole world of power tools out there calling your name—do you know how to use them? In this class you will learn how to properly use a variety of power tools, such as the drill press and the table saw, with confidence. Meanwhile, you will construct a handy and easily portable chair which can accompany you on picnics, camping, or summer evenings in the park.

Join us for a fun-filled week while making your own Shaker inspired step stool. Learn to cut the proper joinery that makes this stool so sturdy. It has many practical uses around the home, or will make a perfect gift for anyone who’s ever had a hard time reaching that high shelf.
 
Toboggans
Toboggan ClassNovember 3-7

Join us for this fun class just in time for toboggan season. The distinctive curved front of these super fast toboggans is made by steam bending solid slats of red oak. You will take part in the steam bending process and leave with your own toboggan, which can make a great gift.

Eco Woodworking ClassEco-woodworking: treadle lathe

What can you do to reduce the impact of your woodworking on the environment? In this class we will address that question through discussions on finishing, design, and construction methods. The hands-on portion of the class will focus on woodworking without electricity—that is, using hand tools and the foot-powered lathe.

Take your afternoons to enjoy the natural environment at its best. The Greenbrier River Trail, a 78-mile bicycle trail, runs just behind Pocahontas Woods, and Pocahontas County is packed full of state parks and national forest land.
